Overly large breasts can cause some women to have both health and emotional problems. In addition to self image issues, you may also experience physical pain and discomfort. The weight of excess breast tissue can impair your ability to lead an active life. Our plastic surgeon, Dr. Nicholas Sieveking, can perform a breast reduction – removing excess breast fat, glandular tissue and skin to achieve a breast size in proportion with your body.

Breast Reduction Procedure

Available at Sieveking Plastic Surgery in Nashville, TN, a breast reduction is typically performed through incisions on your breasts with surgical removal of the excess fat, glandular tissue and skin. In some cases, excess fat may be removed through liposuction in conjunction with the excision techniques described below. If breast size is largely due to fatty tissue, and excess skin is not a factor, liposuction alone may be used in the procedure for breast reduction. The technique used to reduce the size of your breasts will be determined by your individual condition, breast composition, and amount of reduction desired.

Dr. Sieveking will also take a small tissue biopsy during this procedure to rule out any abnormal cells. Our plastic surgeons will work to make any residual scarring as light as possible.

Some bruising and swelling can be expected after breast reduction surgery; however, any discomfort can be controlled with medication. An elastic bandage or support bra is worn to minimize swelling and support the breasts as they heal. A small, thin tube may be temporarily placed under the skin to drain any excess blood or fluid that may collect. Most patients are able to get back to normal daily routines within one to two weeks. Our doctor will advise you not to participate in any strenuous activity or heavy lifting for at least four weeks after breast reduction surgery.

The results of breast reduction surgery are often immediately noticeable. The results should continue to improve as the swelling from surgery fades.
